How to Construct a Pizza Oven When You're a Scout

If there is one skill that scouts all over the world wish to perfect, it is cooking. Making a delicious meal from scratch is a fantastic experience, but doing it outdoors using natural or basic materials adds to the fun factor tenfold. One recipe that scouts have grown to love is the pizza. However, creating it requires something to bake it in. This is why making a pizza oven when you’re a scout is a fun and exciting challenge that’s worth taking on.

Scouts at 5th Worcester share how they did it.

Materials You Need

The first thing you must do is to gather the materials required for your project. For building your pizza oven, all you need is a rectangular tray, some bricks or cinder blocks, and aluminum/tin foil. The bricks or cinder blocks are to be used for constructing the oven's walls, and the tray is for placing the uncooked pizza. Foil is used to line the tray and make cleaning easier.

Creating the Foundation

Once you have the materials ready, the next step is to build your foundation. Find a flat, even patch of ground and start by placing three to four bricks together lengthwise. Make sure the bricks are held together with

a bit of pressure to stand upright. Now repeat the same process on both sides of the brick wall and keep going until you have your rectangular foundation. In case the ground is uneven, place some rocks underneath the bricks as a basis.

Making the Walls

Now that your foundation is ready, the next step is to build the walls of your pizza oven. Start by placing bricks along lengthwise over the base until you reach the exact height you desire. Make sure the bricks or cinder blocks are levelled correctly to provide a sturdy structure. Repeat the method to do the same thing with the other walls until you have your pizza oven walls.

Heat It Up

These bricks or cinder blocks retain the heat, providing a fantastic cooking environment. Add some coal to your oven and light it up. Then, when the coal catches flame, let it burn for some time until it turns white. Once it's white heat up, spread the coal throughout the oven evenly and tap any ash off the coal.

Let's Make Some Pizza

When your oven is ready, prepare the pizza, and put it on your tray, which ought to be lined with foil. Slide the tray into your oven. Most scouts say that a 10-inch pizza cooks in a minimal amount of time, so in less than ten minutes, your scrumptious pizza will be ready.

So, creating your pizza oven when you’re a scout is an entertaining and rewarding task that’s fun to do. Not only do you get to make it from scratch, but you also get to choose your ingredients, which means you can put together any variation of pizza that you please. Not to mention the great memories you’ll make with your fellow scouts while working on this project. When you plan your next scouting trip, don’t forget to include pizza in the menu - you’ll be surprised at how simple it is to create your own oven and how much better the pizza tastes when it comes out piping hot.
