Learning Resilience the Scouts Way

When things don't quite go according to plan, it's easy to feel disheartened and give up. But in the world of Scouting, we know that adaptability is key, and that by learning to be resilient, we can thrive even in challenging circumstances. 8th Worcester had a lesson in resilience and adaptability during a recent camp.

At its core, Scouting is all about empowering young people to overcome challenges and grow into confident, capable adults. Whether it's coping with a last-minute change of plan, dealing with a difficult hike, or working towards a challenging badge, Scouts are encouraged to develop their ability to bounce back from setbacks and come out stronger.

It was supposed to be the perfect trip. The eager young scouts, with their leaders planned to head off in a minibus full of supplies—they were ready for an adventure in Shropshire.

But before they set off, things didn't go as planned. The minibus needed some love, and Jamie jumped into action to repair it. Then they got the news that their campsite on the side of Wrekin hill, it was completely waterlogged from recent heavy rain. They rang around to find alternatives, one was double booked, the other flooded.

The scouts’ spirits were starting to dampen and the leaders almost gave up. At the eleventh hour the volunteers proposed that they camp in their own hut and make the most of a the unplanned gremlins.

Friday evening consisted of movie marathons, board games and group activities followed by a hearty breakfast cooked by the Scouts themselves in the morning before setting off on a 7k local hike. By mid-afternoon everyone was exhausted but still determined; axe work commenced followed by fire lighting tutorials (with great success!), then dinner -a giant paella cooked over an open fire – before heading home late into Saturday afternoon after what had felt like both a blessing and challenge all rolled into one day!

Parents were amazed at how resilient the volunteers and scouts had been during this unexpected turn of events -and most importantly , no one left disappointed with having spent quality time together cooking under stars despite not being able to make it all the way Shropshire itself !

At the end of the day, resilience is an essential life skill that can help young people thrive in all areas of their lives, whether that's at school, in their personal relationships, or in their future careers. By learning resilience the Scouts way, through experiential learning, positive mindset, and community support, Scouts are better equipped to face challenges with confidence, adaptability, and determination. So whether you're a parent looking to give your child the best possible start in life, or a young person looking for a fun, supportive community to be part of, Scouting could be just the thing to help you build your resilience and reach your full potential.
