Worcester Scouts Brecon Trip

Updated: Dec 23, 2022

We had a perfect weekend in the Brecons in November with some of our fabulous Scouts, with great participation from the 1st, 2nd, 5th and 8th Worcester.

They left at tea time and stayed in a fabulous Bunkhouse, staying up late to make new friendships, form their walking groups and prepare their routes. Harry briefed the weather, Neil sorted the hot chocolate, Brian discovered we need new compasses, Phil sorted the splinter, Paul checked the gear and Sid, well was Sid.

On Saturday, a crisp and frosty morning, they set off in groups of 7 and 8 up the mountains in search of a crashed Wellington Bomber, which they all found. Some a bit slower than others, however, we are still deciding whether it was the Scout’s navigation or their leader!

They explored and discovered sinkholes, marshes, waterfalls, ponies and hairy caterpillars. One group even spotted a Merlin, the bird not the helicopter. They all took turns in navigating using different techniques and the first team back celebrated with some much enjoyed hot chocolate.

In the evening the normal camp affair of pasta was followed by group reflections of the day and thinking games. Leaders were richly rewarded by cheese and biscuits after the Scouts fell asleep, very quickly we might add!

On Sunday we drove back home via Llangorse Activity Centre where they bouldered, abseiled, climbed, walked over a high ropes course and went caving too. All in a day’s work for our Scouts!

The next District hillwalking weekend will be in November 2023 with dates to be confirmed. Remember, leaders don't need to attend with their Scouts. If you fancy taking your Scouts out hillwalking and need help, please get in touch with Brian from the 1st Worcester or Sid & Paul from the 5th Worcester. Each has a T2 permit and may help if they are free, or if you wish to gain your own, can help get some quality mountain days on your logbook!
